I have followed the above steps and get no noise without the toner cartridge installed.

I get grinding noises followed by 41.3 errors. I got it used, so there is no original back.

I have a LaserJet 4 Plus with duplexer unit. My gut feeling is you have a toner cartridge issue. If not then there is a kit on this site to replace that gear. If the gears move fine look at the white gear in the fuser cavity on the left side when looking from the rear of the printer to see if those gears are ok. Turn the gears on the fuser from the top by hand and see if you feel and bump in them. If not present, the fuser may be an issue and with the power off open the back cover, remove the two screws at the bottom which secure the fuser and carefully remove it straight out from the back. If the defect is present you still have a toner issue. Is the defect present or is the print ok. When the back edge enters the printer, lift the toner door to stop the printing and remove the toner and look at the image below.

If you still hear the knocking sound without the toner, put it back in a put a sheet of paper on the manual feeder and do a self test from the test menu. If no, the toner cartridge is the issue and need to be replaced. If yes open the cover again and remove the toner cartridge and close the cover again. Does it turn and do you hear the knocking sound. First thing the user needs to do is to open and close the top cover and the motor should turn. Lets try to help this person not give information with no help. If your paper tray has the original corner tab shown below, the new modified corner tab in this kit will reduce these errors (but will not totally eliminate it.) Kit Description: Hewlett Packard intoduced a modified corner tab in the paper tray to reduce this problem. Look for the arrow on the ream label-it points to the side you should print on first.) Also, try printing on the other side of the paper. Workaround: These errors occur more often when using lighter weight paper (usually inexpensive paper.) Thus you can reduce these errors if you use a heavier, high-quality paper. If you stop getting paper jams, the roller is the problem. To verify this, remove the lower paper tray and print from the built-in paper tray. Symptoms: Your HP LJ-4 often displays Error 13 Paper Jam or Error 41.3.Ĭause: According to a Service Note from Hewlett Packard, the LJ-4 printer "may be less tolerant than its predecessors when feeding out-of-spec, damaged, or improperly manufactured paper." In other words, the LJ-4 doesn't handle paper as well as other LaserJets.Īlternate Cause: If your printer has the OPTIONAL 500 sheet lower tray assembly (not the built-in 250 sheet tray), the pickup roller maybe worn. If jobs work ok from the manual tray, I would have to say that both machines have problems with the PIU (paper input unit). In that case it could be the PIU unit itself, the pickup roller or even the tray. When you get the 13 error is there paper jamed anyplace in the machine or is it that the pickup roller does not even pick up the sheet causing the error. I can not see this happening on both machines, so the 13 error you get on the other machine may be something completely different. On later machines this was classified as an unexpected size error. If one of the switches is flakey and at times decides to go off, the machine will think the paper in the printer is a different size and you will be the 41.3 error. What may be happening at least on the 41.3 error has to do with the paper size sensor switches behind the leaf springs I mentioned. The connectors on the scanner that you mentioned above have nothing to do with a 41.3 or the type of error you are getting. If not, again there are some possibilities. In other words have you ever had the 41.3 or 13 paper jam from the manual tray.

Do both machines print 20-30 page doucments ok from the manual tray.
